For good reason too, they’re safer than cash and they allow parents to easily track their kids spending habits. That being said, the question is, what type of card you should use and what will it cost to use it. The three varieties are debit and prepaid cards, secured credit cards and student credit cards. Each of these cards have the visa ® and Mastercard insignia and are accepted most places regular credit cards are accepted.

Debit/Prepaid cards " The difference between these two cards is negligible, one pulls from a bank account and the other is preloaded like a phone card. These cards are largely used to fund children’s allowances, or college students that still receive money from home. If the children are under-age parents can have the cards issued into their names and simply have the child added as a user of the card.

These cards are also popular for undocumented workers as an alternative to the high cost of check cashing operations. For this reason, the fees associated with these cards range from barely acceptable to highway robbery. Most of the cards will charge a per-transaction fee or a flat monthly fee for using the card. What you need to pay particular attention to is the annual fees and the reloading fees. Many of these cards have neither, however, since these cards cater to each side of the economic spectrum you need to do your homework before getting one.

Secured Credit Cards " These cards differ from debit cards and prepaid cards in one area, they build credit by reporting to the credit bureaus. The only reason to use this card is to help your child build credit. This is because they require you to pay your credit limit up front, and then they charge you interest to use it. No really, think about it, you give the bank $500, and when you need to “borrow” some of your money, they charge you interest. Kind of sounds silly when you say it out loud, doesn’t it?

However, these cards can be a safe alternative for you to build credit for your child, if they are used wisely. The trick is, to get the card and never use it. Credit cards only have to be used once to begin reporting to the bureau. After that, you can tear the card up and never use it again. Most people mistakenly believe that the card has to be used regularly to build credit, this simply isn’t true. Credit bureaus only report, how long you have had the card, what your limit is and if you have been late on your payments.

Student Credit Cards " These cards are, for the most part, used by college students without the parent’s involvement. These cards usually give small initial limits and steady increases as the student shows fiscal responsibility. These cards aren’t designed for people with bad credit, but specifically for students without any credit at all. The credit card issuers will usually require that the student provide school transcripts, a diploma or a student id before approving the card.

This is an ideal way for student to build their credit or ruin their credit early in life. Many student loans have been turned down due to a poor payment history on student credit cards. Some student credit cards will require co-signers from the parents to ensure that the account is paid as agreed. Make no mistake though, if you cosign for your child, and he or she skips a payment or two, your credit will suffer right along with theirs.

by Aubrey Clark

Boosting Your Credit Score To Get The Best Credit Card Deal

Making Your Credit Rating Work For You

One of the basics of getting the most competitive credit card deal in the market is to ensure you have the best credit record possible. Few of us are lucky enough to be earning a six-figure salary, and many people are likely to have other financial undertakings that a potential lender will want to take into account. None of this, however, should preclude you from getting a top bracket credit rating. Getting a credit score of 700+ may be beyond some consumers, but lifting your credit rating to a point at which lenders will furnish you with some of their best deals is not an insurmountable task.

It can be a stressful time applying for a new line of credit. Many consumers get upset when applying for a new credit card when they find out their credit score is low, and they have poor credit.

A lower credit score can impact the amount of money that financial institutions will lend you. It can also impact on the rate of interest at which you borrow. In some cases, the difference between having an excellent credit rating and a poor one could be getting a 0% deal on your credit card, and paying an APR that touches 30%. Sometimes financial institutions won’t even lend you a dime, based on a low credit score.

A variety of factors can impact on your credit score. Generally speaking, lenders love stability more than anything else. Paying amounts owed on time is but one of many variables. It could be that you’ve lived in more than one address over the preceding three years; or having borrowings with a variety of institutions. It could even be down to the fact that you’ve got too much credit already at your disposal.

But just what goes into your credit score? A report by the analytics experts Fair Issac recently broke credit scoring down into five categories and assessed their importance on the final rating.

Most important was how you had paid you bills in the past with the most emphasis on recent activity. Naturally, paying all your bills on time is good; paying them consistently late is bad. Having accounts that were sent to collection agencies is even worse, though nowhere near as bad as declaring bankruptcy. Paying your bills in a timely and consistent manner contributed to 35 percent of the score.

Next most important was the amount of money you owe and the amount of available credit at your disposal. The assessment of outstanding debt fell into several categories, and included credit cards, car loans, mortgages, home equity lines, and so on. Also given consideration was the total amount of credit available. If a customer has 10 credit cards that each have $10,000 credit limits, that totals $100,000 of available credit. Generally speaking, people who have a lot of credit available tend to use it. This makes them a less attractive credit risk. This amounts to 30 per cent of the total credit score.

Also impacting on credit scores is the length of credit history (15 percent). The longer a customer has had credit – particularly if it's with the same financial institution – the more points they get.

The mix of credit contributes 10 percent to the credit score. Customers with the best scores have a mix of both revolving credit, such as credit cards, and installment credit, such as mortgages and car loans. Statistically, consumers with a richer variety of experiences are better credit risks. As far as banks and credit card companies are concerned, they know how to handle money.

The last important factor taken into consideration is new credit applications (10 percent). If you’ve applied for several lines of credit in the past few months this will negatively impact your credit score.

The antidotes to this are simple. Pay your bills in a timely manner, particularly in the months leading up to an application. Close unused retail store cards, credit cards and old bank accounts with overdraft facilities. Maintain long-standing and healthy arrangements with banks and other lenders. Don’t apply for a stack of credit cards, loans and so on, unless you’re absolutely sure it’s the right product for you. It goes without saying that you shouldn’t apply for a credit line unless you use it.

There’s a sixth factor that can contribute enormously to a negative credit rating. In 2001 it became possible for customers to get their own credit score in exchange for a small fee. In the past, prospective lenders were able to keep this score hidden, and many unscrupulous institutions used this knowledge to charge a higher APR on credit. By being aware of your credit score lenders can't lie and say your score was low and charge higher APR on your credit card.

More importantly, it’s vital that you get rid of black marks on your credit rating. Errors unfortunately happen all the time, and erroneous reports of missed payments, referrals to debt collectors and even bankruptcies can scupper your chances of getting a low rate of interest and even a credit card altogether. Query everything and haggle with credit reference agencies so that only the information that is listed on your credit history that should be there, is there.

You can find out your credit history by applying to one of several companies. Many offer an online service and can furnish you with the information both quickly and cheaply. Equifax, Truecredit and Consumerinfo are some of the best such providers.

Patience is the key to getting a great credit score – and the best credit deals. You’re never going to make the jump from having a credit score of 500 to one of 700 overnight, but by implementing easy to follow and practical strategies, you can quite easily leverage your credit score to a rating that is respected by all concerned.

By: Ethan Hunter

Credit Card Fundamentals

Credit cards are really useful and handy. You need not to worry about theft, burglary or carrying large sums of money. On the other hand, shopping can also be rewarding. Most of the credit card companies offer rewards in the form of gift vouchers; discount shopping, air miles etc, for every dollar you spend. Some of the points earned can be accumulated and later the reward is transferred to income generating account. This will help you to have savings along with the credit card.

Usage And Rewards

The selection of the credit card should be on the basis of value for money. Majority of the credit card companies offer rewards but it is up to you to select the one, which is best, suited for you. The credit card usage should be such that the income and expenses should be in balance. Select the credit card, which is best, suited for your purpose. Make sure that the reward offered by the credit card company should include your choice or your purpose. If you are a frequent traveler, it is better to opt for a card, which offers free air miles. You can also use your credit card to pay up your grocery bills, monthly bills and even medical bills.

Credit Limit And Options

The credit card limit should be maintained low, since credit limit will be higher than reimbursement. Select a credit card, which is having greater choice and option. The reward generated from the credit card can also be used to pay for the annual fee of credit card. The credit card holder should frequently check the accounts so that one can effectively use the credit card. To get your value for the money, it is essential to use the credit card wisely. If you use your credit card with much caution and prompt in clearing the bills, usage of credit card is a rewarding experience.

By Zack Nelson

Boosting Your Credit Score To Get The Best Credit Card Deal

Making Your Credit Rating Work For You

One of the basics of getting the most competitive credit card deal in the market is to ensure you have the best credit record possible.

Debit Card Vs. Credit Card, What Are The Differences?

Ah, the “good old days”. If you are a baby boomer, like me, then you probably remember how important it was to rush to the bank on payday. You had to get there before the teller lanes closed so that you could have your “cash allowance” for the week. Otherwise, if you needed cash you had to write a check, then go to the bank, and “cash” the check for real cash.

Fortunately the days of the mad rush to get cash from the bank are long gone. We now enjoy the convenience of using a nearby automatic teller machine (ATM) or you can even get “cash back” at your local grocery, hardware or convenience store.

The card you use at the ATM is known as a debit card. When debit cards first appeared it was easy to tell them apart from credit cards. Debit cards didn’t have a credit card company logo on them; instead, they usually just had your bank name, your account number and your name.

Today debit cards look exactly like credit cards even carrying the same logos. Both types of cards can be swiped at the checkout counter , used to make purchases on the internet, or to pay for the fill-up at the gas pump.

When you use your debit card to make a purchase, it’s just like using cash. The account that is attached to your debit card, in most cases your checking account, is automatically debited when you use your debit card. The cost of your purchase is deducted from the funds you have in that account.

On the other hand, when you use your credit card to make a purchase you are using someone’s else’s money, specifically the issuer of the credit card, usually a banking institution.

In effect, you agree to pay them back the money you borrowed to make your purchase. In addition you will also pay interest on the money “loaned” to you at the rate which you agreed to when you applied for their credit card. This is known as the annual percentage rate (APR).

While the two cards might act and look alike, the levels of consumer protection that each type of card provides can be different.

Under federal law, if someone steals your credit card you're only responsible to pay the first $50 of unauthorized charges. However, if you notify the credit card issuer before a thief is able to make any charges you may be free from all liability. If the credit card is not physically present when an unauthorized or fraudulent purchase is made, such as over the internet, you’re also free from liability for those charges.

MasterCard and Visa offer zero-liability protection where you won’t pay any charges if someone uses your credit card to make an unauthorized purchase.

The protection offered to debit card fraud is similar but with a few exceptions. For example, your liability under federal law is limited to $50, the same as for a credit card, but only if you notify the issuer within two business days of discovering the card's loss or theft. Your liability for debit card fraud can jump up to $500 if you don’t report the loss or theft within two business days.

And if you are the type of person that gives a passing glance to your monthly bank statement, you could be totally liable for any fraudulent debit card charges if you wait 60 days or more from the time your statement is mailed.

Visa and MasterCard zero-liability protection applies to your debit card but only for transactions that do not involve the use of your PIN (personal identification number).

Additional protection against fraudulent use of your credit or debit cards may be available through your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance. Check your policy or with your agent for more information about your coverage.

Also be aware that you should contact your card issuer by certified letter, return receipt requested, after you’ve contacted them by phone to protect your consumer rights.

As for which card to use for what type of purchase, most experts agree that you should use your debit card for the same type of purchases you’d make as if you were using cash. Therefore, it makes more sense to use your debit card than your credit card at the grocery store or gas station (provided you have sufficient funds to cover these purchases of course).

Avoid using your debit card for any online purchase or for something which is expensive. Why ? You’ll find it much easier to dispute a charge when you use your credit card. If your gold-plated, limited edition, hip-swinging Elvis wall clock arrives broken, your credit card company will remove the charge until the problem is resolved.

With your debit card you are stuck dealing with the merchant directly to resolve any problems with a purchase, even if your banking institution could really use a gold-plated, limited edition, hip-swinging Elvis wall clock of their very own.

By: James Dimmitt

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://cardcreditmechine.blogspot.com/2008/06/debit-card-vs-credit-card-what-are.html' title='Debit Card Vs. there are so many choices and the “small print” is so varied it can be hard to understand exactly what a consumer is agreeing to.

Many credit cards offer guaranteed acceptance regardless of credit, but the consumer must read through a list sometimes several pages long, to try to find the information they are looking for most.

Below is some information to help distinguish one kind of “credit card with poor credit” offer from another; each company will have its own small print naturally but this should clarify some of the common terms used for credit cards.

Pre-Approved And Acceptance Guaranteed*

Credit cards for poor credit offers which include the terms pre-approved or acceptance guaranteed are almost always followed by an asterisk (*); this is because the terms and conditions will state that the card holder must meet certain qualifying conditions.

Common qualifying conditions will include income, time of employment, time at residence, and of course credit rating; the exact amount will vary by credit card, most will require a minimum of 12,000 dollars annual income and six months of continuous employment.

When residency is an issue the company may also require a minimum of six months at the address and most charge a higher annual percentage charge the lower credit rating the applicant has; while the company will accept any credit they will charge the people with poor credit higher annual fees, annual percentage rate, and possibly require a deposit.

Secured Credit Cards

Secured credit cards for poor credit applicants may charge a higher annual percentage rate like the unsecured variety; the major difference will be that there is less qualifying information because the “credit” available on the card is pre-paid in full by the card holder.

This type of credit card for poor credit applicants works much like a debit card to a checking or savings account except balances left on the credit card are charged a monthly fee based on an annual percentage rate; these balances are also subject to minimum finance charges.

Pre-Paid Credit Cards

Pre-paid credit cards are somewhat different from secured credit cards because a pre-paid card will have no annual fee; it is more of a gift card with a Visa or Master Card logo than a true credit card.

These credit cards for poor credit applicants can seem like a good option because the company doesn’t check credit or employment history; but because this isn’t a true credit card it will not improve any credit rating or good spending and payment habits will not be reported to credit agencies.

Why Get A Credit Card

Credit cards for poor credit applicants are a good tool to turn poor or terrible credit around after time; the trick is to get a credit card with a small limit to start and try to pay off new debt each month instead of carrying a balance.

This is debatable by credit experts, some credit experts say to carry a balance and pay just a bit more than the minimum to build credit, while others suggest paying off the balance monthly.

Credit cards for poor credit applicants should be paid off monthly because this lessens the risk of getting into further financial trouble, establishes a good payment pattern, and shows future creditors on time regular payments; many creditors look for regular on time payments, when considering offering credit.

By: Roland Jefferson

I'm A Credit Card Deadbeat: You Can Be One Too!

I am delighted to say that I am a credit card deadbeat! In fact, some of you might already be credit card deadbeats too, if so, I commend you for your excellent work! Now, as for those who don’t know what a credit card deadbeat is, before you start thinking I have a screw loose, you may want to continue reading!

When I say that I am a credit card deadbeat, I don’t mean that I avoid my credit card bills. To the contrary, a credit card deadbeat is the insider term used by credit card company executives and refers to all of the credit card users who pay off their bill each month promptly; in doing so, such customers pay no interest and prevent the creditor from making any profit! That’s me! I love being a credit card deadbeat!

The alternative to being a credit card deadbeat is what credit card executives call a revolver. A revolver is a credit card user that constantly carries a balance and is charged regular, monthly interest on their charges. Credit card companies love revolvers because they, in essence, increase the bottom line for the credit card company and make them a nice profit. Further, from an insider perspective, the best customers not only carry a balance, but also make their payments late, triggering extra fees and a higher interest rate.

Okay, so I've been a credit card deadbeat for awhile now, but last year I went even further in improved my deadbeat ways. Not only did I hang onto my hard earned cash by refusing to line the wallets of the credit card companies, but I also happily lined my own wallet with their money, to the tune of $1,402. Yes, that’s right, they paid me $1,402 to use their cards; continue reading to find out how!

Cash Back Credit Card

First, I applied online for a Cash Back Credit Card and I was instantly approved. My new cash back credit card arrived to my house the following week ready for me to use. This card offered me 0% APR for 12 months and carried no annual fee; With it, I made all of my gas purchases, as well as grocery and drugstore purchases and earned 5% back cash back on the gas purchases and 1% back on all other purchases. I have a family of four and the gas purchases included gas for my spouse’s car as well. My average monthly purchases and cash back earnings were as follows:

Monthly Gas Purchases $325 x .05 = $16.25
Monthly Grocery Bill $1,200 x .01 =$12.00
Monthly Drugstore Purchases $160 x .01 = 1.60

Total Cash Back Earnings From Credit Card $ 29.85 x 12 = $358.20

Airline Rewards Credit Card

I also applied for an airline rewards credit card and again was instantly approved online. Like the cash back credit card, my new airline rewards credit card arrived the following week, came with a 0% introductory APR for 12 months and had no annual fee. This credit card earns 1 frequent flyer mile for every $1 charged.

I charged many of my miscellaneous expenses, including major purchases and business expenses, on my new Airline Rewards Credit Card. As a result, the qualified expenses came to an average of $2,250 monthly or $27,000 for the year, earning 27,000 frequent flyer miles, more than enough for an airline ticket to Hawaii: a $500 value!

0% Introductory APR for 12 Months

Now here’s the kicker. Since both credit cards came with a 0% introductory APR for 12 months, I paid only the minimum payments on each card and placed the money for my purchases into a savings account earning 2.5% (rates have gone up since). Using averages for simplicity, I made 12 monthly deposits of $3,935 into a savings account earning 2.5% interest compounded monthly. By the end of the year, I earned $544 in interest!

My Total Credit Card Earnings for the Year

So here is my total earnings from the cash back credit card, airline rewards card, and interest earned.

Cash Back 12 x 29.85 = $358
Free Airline Ticket $500
Savings Account Interest $544

Total Earned $1,402

Just to make sure I maintain my deadbeat ways, now that the 0% introductory rate has expired, I’ve paid off my balance from the money I deposited into my savings account during the year. To be a credit card deadbeat you need persistence, determination, and discipline. I did it, and so can you!

By: Stephanie Andrews

Online Credit Card - Prepaid Debit Card

The numbers vary on how many credit cards each person carries. I've seen it stated anywhere from five to fifteen counting bank cards, gas cards, and department store charge cards. But there are still those hold outs, people who don't have any credit cards at all.

If you're one of these lucky people and reading this on the internet, chances are you've seen something online that you wanted to buy, but the problem was you needed at least an online credit card to pay for it. That's where the prepaid debit card can come in handy for those wanting to avoid credit card debt.

With a regular credit card, the issuer lends the money to the consumer who in turn pays for the charge at a later date. There are those who pay the entire bill due upon receipt of their monthly statement. However, many of us run a balance each month and pay an affordable portion of the bill and are charged an agreed upon interest for the outstanding balance. Believe me when I say, it's easy for that balance to creep up before you finally realize it's in the thousands of dollars of an unsecured debt you then owe.

For those of you who don't want to take a chance on getting yourself in that situation, you avoid credit cards completely. But that can be a problem if you want to take advantage of so many outstanding offers available on the internet. Without an online credit card you may want to look into a prepaid debit card.

With a prepaid debit card you deposit the funds with the financial institution in advance. You receive a card that looks the same as any other credit card and you can use it just like a regular card wherever their logo is displayed. The difference is the amount charged is then taken from the credit balance you maintain with the issuer.

Many of you don't like to carry that much cash around. I know with me, I can go thru cash like water. But if I have to charge it, even with a prepaid debit card, I think twice. Plus I can keep better track of where that money goes. Another advantage with a prepaid debit card is it's accepted at all ATM machines so that you have continuous access to your funds just like cash.

So if you are one of those who has managed to escape this long without a credit card and would like to take advantage of the new freedom of shopping from comfort of your own home on the internet, you might take a moment of your time to shop online for a credit card or at the least, a prepaid debit card. With a prepaid debit card, rather than you paying interest, you receive interest on your credit balance.

By: Bradley Carson

What Debt Card, Oops! Agatha Christie (1890-1976)

You notice I called credit cards by their real name in the title of this chapter. Make no mistake, the outcome of using a credit card is to create debt. It would be a lot more difficult to market a “Debt” card but that is what they are. In case you weren't aware of it, Federal regulators are pressuring banks into raising the minimum credit card payment from 2% to 4% to "help" consumers get out of debt quickly but somehow failed to address the usury interest rates charged by these companies.

Here are a few things you might not know about the credit card industry.

Credit Card Industry Facts:

The credit card industry earned $1,200,000,000,000 last year. That is $1.2 TRILLION in profits.

In 2004 consumers were charged $14.8 BILLION dollars in late fees.

Here’s a cute little tactic used often by our credit card brethren. Not posting your payment on the day it is received so that they can charge you the late fee. They made millions using this technique last year.

Changing the due date or mailing the bill so that it is difficult at best to meet the deadline and there by charging another late fee.

With two late charges on your ‘record’ your interest rate goes up as much as 10 points. This can be done without notifying you, by the way.

These companies have even resorted to not mailing out statements so that you will pay late and therefore be charged at least $29 in late fees and sometimes more.

Signing you up without your permission for credit insurance that virtually never pays out.

Checking your credit reports to see if you are charging on other cards and if it is ‘deemed excessive’, raising your interest rate by as much as twice your current rate.

Charging you a $25 fee for NOT USING your credit card.

Capital One has been sued because their customers mailed in the checks a full two weeks before the due date but were deemed late, charged the late fee and the interest rate was hiked to double digits.

Citibank paid a $45 million dollar settlement because they improperly assessed late fees and raised the interest rate up to 24% if the customer was late on any payments to other creditors, even if you are current on every payment to them.

The largest settlement by far against a credit card provider was against Providian for $300 Million dollars! Why? For improperly assessing late fees and charging customers for things they never ordered like credit insurance. The amount of the fine was proportional to the amount of abuse.

Sometimes because of the stress associated with these fees and abuses, people go out and try to borrow their way out of trouble with debt consolidation loans. This only adds to the problem if they don't tear up the cards.

Credit card debt has gotten to the point that it is not like owing the general store and not paying off the bill at the end of the month or when you get your next pay check. This is loan sharking at its worst and some say the rights of individuals were taken away by the changes in the bankruptcy laws made recently due to the efforts of lobbyists from the credit card companies. I think the little guy needs help and that is why I wrote this book. There is a term used often in Real Estate: “Operating from a position of superior knowledge”. One can get sued for taking advantage of another for just this reason. Seems to me, the credit card companies mentioned above along with many others, are operating from a position of superior knowledge.

According to Robert Hinsley, a Houston attorney, “Being a good customer is not going to protect you,” says Hinsley. “Nor will paying your bill on time each month protect you. Many of the major cards -- First USA, Chase, Capital One, Providian, Citibank, Penney’s -- have been sued over practices regarding unfair billing practices and blatantly using tactics to cheat you out of your money. There is plenty of evidence that indicates most credit card companies think you are dumb and helpless and will not take any action. So they can easily use dirty tricks to cheat you out of your money.”

Now are you ready to fight back and negotiate a settlement with these people? Don’t be discouraged because the good news is, you can fight back. You can negotiate and you can reach a settlement advantageous to you! Pull yourself up to your full height, take a deep breath, know you are not alone and let’s get started!

By: Pat Hicks

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://cardcreditmechine.blogspot.com/2008/05/what-debt-card-oops-i-mean-credit-card.html' title='What Debt Card, Oops! In fact, credit card owners use lavishly their credit card, which is considered to be a leading cause for the credit card debt consolidation.

No doubt, credit card debt consolidation is considered to be the best way to deal with your credit card debts. In the credit card debt consolidation borrower merges all the credit card debts into one single manageable debt. In a way it helps the borrower to settle down his various credit card debts with single monthly installment.

Credit card debt consolidation is considered to be good idea for the borrowers as it helps to make single payment for different credit card debts; it also helps the borrower to lock desired interest rate for all the debts. Moreover, borrowers feel comfortable and easy while dealing with the consolidation as it reduces borrower’s amount of monthly payment that goes towards debt repayment.

In the loan market, there may be many lenders who are ready to offer according to your request i.e. larger amount with easy repayment option at lower interest rate. Like other loans, credit card debt consolidation comes in two ways i.e. secured and unsecured. The difference between the two lies in absence or presence of the collateral.

Credit card debt consolidation is considered as an easier way to pay off borrower’s existing debt and become debt free. So, if you are looking for credit card debt consolidation, you should know your debts in detail. To deal with your credit card debt consolidation, you should search for a lender who is professional in handling and offering credit card debts.

While opting for credit card debt consolidation make sure that you are making a decision that is profitable to you.

By Ann Gibson

Credit Card Solution

Ideally, credit card processing method ensures fast business transaction and security for the buyers and sellers. For credit card processing, a fee is charged by credit card provider. The service provider acts as an intermediary in credit card transaction processing. It validates credit card numbers and expiration dates and obtains authorization from the credit card issuers. At the end of the payment transaction, confirmation numbers is sent to the taxpayers.

Credit card processing can be done via two modes i.e. offline processing and online (real time) processing.

Offline Credit card processing

Offline credit card processing is not instant. Transactions are grouped together and then processing is done at physical location. It is less complicated to set up and doesn't require a payment gateway. This makes the offline credit card processing more cheaper than online credit card processing.

Real Time Credit Card processing

It automatically processes credit card orders and authorization is done immediately. Capturing credit card merchant services transactions over the Internet requires merchant account. Online merchant account is an account that accepts and processes the credit card payments on Internet. It's a special account tied to a credit card processor. When the credit card is verified and approved, the customer receives immediate notification that the order is accepted and the funds are transferred from the customer's bank account to the merchant's account. Real time credit card processing is expensive and bit complicated to set up. It is suitable for big merchants conducting high volume of transactions that are meant to be processed instantly.

By Jack Chevalier

Having Credit Card Debts!! This might sound like poor or unworkable advice. But if you apply online for a credit card and it’s the right type of credit card, you are pretty certain of being accepted for the credit card. And you’ll be on your way to establishing a good credit record for yourself.

So what kind of credit card am I referring to when I suggest you apply online for a credit card?

I’m referring to a secured credit card.

For those folks unfamiliar with the term “secured credit card” here’s the basics of how the program works.

The person with no credit (you) apply online for a credit card with a bank offering a secured credit card. You make a deposit (that you’ll will not be able to touch) with the bank to act as security for your credit card. That’s because the bank has very little risk – your deposit will cover your use of the credit being extended to you.

There are things to consider when you apply online for a sec

By John Mann

Credit Card Debt Management: Helps To Fix Card Related Debts

The need of cash seldom arises when you are using a credit card. Recent telephone scams in certain parts of the U.S. involve an identity thief calling a small business in hopes of snagging some credit card information.

Many merchant account frauds may pose as a member of the local police force or as an employee of a credit card company in an effort to get merchants to hand over credit card numbers used by shoppers.

When pretending to be a police detective, thieves have been known to claim they recently caught some individuals suspected of credit card fraud. The fraudster then tries to convince whoever they speak with to provide information from recent credit card transactions.

If the thief chooses to pose as an employee of Master Card, Visa, or another credit card company, they may pretend that the merchant's credit card machine had gone off-line.

Next, the thief will say they need to input the merchant's credit card transactions in manually, and require credit card numbers and information. The thief may explain that he will call back after first inputting the information.

In either case, or whenever a merchant or consumer gets a call where the other person's identity cannot be verified, the best thing to do is to hang up. A quick call back to the police or credit card company can verify whether they were in fact responsible for the earlier call.

When a scam or potential scam occurs, merchants should get in touch with their local police department to file a report.

By Zed Miller

But having too many bank credit cards can create a negative impact on the credit score of the person. If a bank credit card is no longer in use, it is better to cancel it. When a bank credit card is lost or stolen, it is better to cancel the credit card in order to avoid fraudulent use of the card.

Before canceling a bank credit card, one should check whether any balance remains to be paid for the particular bank credit card. Notify the bank about canceling a bank credit card only after paying off the balance amount completely. Otherwise, some banks increase the interest rate if the cardholder tries to cancel while a balance still exists.

Canceling a bank credit card can be done either by sending a letter to the bank or notifying the bank of the cancellation by phone. The request letter should contain the name, address, and account number of the cardholder. Always keep a copy of this letter to avoid future problems. On accepting the request, the bank sends back a notice, either on the same day or the next day. The rewards on the credit card as well as bank machine access stops upon cancellation of a bank credit card. Moreover, the convenience checks issued by the bank are destroyed.

After canceling a bank credit card, the person must get a copy of the current credit report and make sure to verify the credit score. The cancellation of the credit card must be reported correctly in the credit report.

It is always advisable to keep the bank credit card when the person is planning to take a vehicle loan or mortgage. Canceling a large number of unused bank credit cards can also adversely affect the credit score.

By Josh Riverside

Credit Card Faq - Credit Card Security And Authentication

With the ever rising reports of credit card fraud, fraudulent use, internet phishing and identity theft, people are rightly concerned about credit card security. Fraudulent credit card use can be an annoyance at best, and seriously damage your credit at worst. It's only reasonable that people have questions about credit card security and authentication methods. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about credit card security.

1. How does the ATM or store terminal know my PIN number?

PIN (personal identification numbers) are the most often used way to authenticate your identity when you use your credit or ATM card. When you first choose your PIN number, it is 'encrypted' - stored in a secret code of letters and symbols - and either stored in a database or on the magnetic stripe on the back of your card.

2. If my PIN number is stored in a database, doesn't that mean that bank or credit card employees have access to it?

The encryption method that's used by ATM and credit cards is called 'one-way encryption'. It makes it easy for the bank's computer to verify the PIN given the bank's key and the PIN, but nearly impossible to extract the PIN in text form from the encrypted database.

3. How does the machine 'read' my card?

The stripe on the back of your credit or ATM card is called a magnetic stripe. It's actually made up of thousands of tiny magnetic iron-based particles. The card can be 'written to' much the same way that the hard drive on your computer can be written - by means of magnetic interaction changing the charge. Written into the stripe are your account number and identifying data. When you swipe the card, that information is read and sent via modem to an 'acquirer' - a company that 'acquires' a payment guarantee from the credit card company based on the information stored on your card's magnetic stripe.

4. Isn't buying on the internet dangerous and insecure?

Honestly? Your credit card information is in less danger being transmitted over the internet than it is when you hand your card to a store clerk at the counter. The real danger to your credit card information isn't from hackers hitting online merchants, or stealing your credit card information via modem or phone lines. The real internet security dangers come from two different directions:

a. Hackers using back doors to get into the records of banks, credit card companies and data repositories.

This is the biggest danger. It's also a danger for stores and companies that have records 'online' for billing purposes. There's a great deal being done to improve security of data repositories, which are far more vulnerable than any data transmission stream.

b. The second big credit card security danger is the practice that's sometimes called 'phishing'. In this case, the credit card thieves trick you into giving them your identification and credit card data. They may do this with an email purporting to be from an official of your internet service provider or email, your credit card issuer or anyone else. They also may build sites that are identical to sites like Paypal, American Express and others for the express purpose of capturing your information so that they can use it.

5. How do I protect myself from phishers?

First, never provide your social security number or other identifying data to anyone without first verifying that they are exactly who they say they are. Experts recommend that you never use the link provided in an email to go to the site of someone you do business with. Instead, open a new browser window and type in the known address by hand

You may freely reprint this article provided that the author bio and live links are left intact.

By: Joseph Kenny

How To Get A Credit Card With Bad Credit

Getting a credit card with bad credit is not at all advisable. But nevertheless it is possible for people with bad credit to still get a credit card. You can do so by following the step mentioned below :

1) You can apply for credit cards at smaller organizations like small retail stores instead of well-established financial institutions. If your application is accepted by the small stores, then see to it that you at least make a small purchase once a month and pay the minimum payment required on time.

2) You can also approach your bank for a credit card. If they already have your account or business for several years, then they might issue a credit card to you.

3) You can ask your friend or a relative to jointly sign a credit card with you. You can choose a person with good credit. Be aware that if you are not able to pay the loan, then the joint holder must pay it. This way of getting a credit card is not advisable.

4) You can apply for a secured credit card if all other ways of getting a credit card fail. You will be required to open and maintain a savings account for your line of credit which will be a percentage of your deposit.

5) While you are trying to get your credit card, do pay all your bills on time.

6) Once you get one, offers for credit cards will start pouring in from other credit card companies as well. At the most, keep two credit cards, one for a small credit limit and one for a large credit limit. Keep them paid!

7) Do not get a credit card where you have to pay an annual fee. In fact, most credit card companies today don’t charge an annual fee and you should apply for credit cards in such companies.

8) If you are denied credit by the credit card company, then by law you can ask the company for the reason. You may also request the company to send you a credit report at no charge.

These are some of the steps where you can get a credit card even with bad credit. Once you do get a credit card, you should follow some basic rules while using it. Do not overspend. Pay for everything in cash and use your card only in case of emergencies. This will keep you from buying more than you can afford. Many cards carry interest rates ranging from 18% to 21%. If you fail to pay off your balance every month then it is better for you to stop using your credit card at least until you manage to pay off the pending balance.

To help rebuild your credit in the quickest way, never spend more than 50% of your credit limit and do not keep a pending balance for more than 6 months. Always keep your credit ratings high as it may help you in the future. If you are paying all your high balances on your credit card on time, then try not to part with that card as it will show well on banks and other financial institutions with whom you would like to carry business relations. Try not to pay your balance late as that may lead you to pay extra interest or a late penalty which is totally uncalled for and expensive.

By: Jim Grayson

Airline Credit Card Frequent Flyer Miles - Reward Credit Card Air Miles

There is a difference between an airline credit card with frequent flyer miles or a reward credit card that offers airline miles. As when looking for any consumer product, it's a good idea to compare the offers side by side.

Airline Credit Card With Frequent Flyer Miles

An airline credit card is for a specific airline. You earn air miles for every dollar you spend on that airline and your miles are routinely added to your frequent flyer account. If you have a preference to a particular airline, this would be the card for you.

The airlines generally have partners such as hotels, restaurants, and car rental agencies and you typically receive points when you use your card to purchase services from any of their affiliates. You may also be given a choice to spend your points to upgrade your flight to first class. Some airlines offer a special bonus of an additional ticket for each ticket your purchase at full fare.

An airline credit card generally carries a yearly fee, whether you use the card or not. They also tend to have higher interest rates, so if you're not one to pay your balance in full each month, this may not be the type of card for you.

Reward Credit Card Air Miles

If you want a choice of airlines, a reward credit card with air miles may be what you're looking for. You can earn bonus points to be used for air miles that can be spent on your choice of any airline. Most reward credit cards have no annual fee and lower interest rates than an airline credit card.

With air miles earned with a reward credit card, you are not allowed to apply your air miles earned with frequent flyer miles on another account. Unlike with an airline credit card where you can easily make last minute plans for your flight, generally a reward credit card requires a 21 day notice in advance and a Saturday night stay. Reward card airline miles are often limited to the continental U.S. or a specified zone.

For an international traveler, an airline credit card with frequent flyer miles could be just what you want. Those airline miles can mount quickly. However, if you are just hoping to earn enough points for a short vacation within the U.S. or a specific area, if you use your card for every day purchases and pay the balance each month, to earn free tickets, a reward credit card with air miles would be more suited for you.

Be practical when reviewing your personal needs and financial situation before choosing between an airline credit card with frequent flyer miles or a reward credit card with air miles.

By: Bradley Carson

American Express Credit Card: A Different Kind Of Credit Card

In the financial world, American Express or AMEX is one of the most widely renowned names. If you have a credit card in your wallet, chances are you own a credit card that has a VISA or MasterCard seal in it.

MasterCard and VISA rely on partnerships from different banks in the world and do not issue a credit card of their own. What these companies do is they are simply selling their payment methods.

MasterCard and VISA charge their partners a fee for using the payment systems in order to make money. Both these companies do not issue credit cards. It is important to remember that VISA and MasterCard are only payment systems used by thousands of banks worldwide.

In American Express, they have both the payment methods and issue their own credit cards.

This means American Express runs everything and is independent from credit card companies like VISA and MasterCard. They don't need to rely on the payment systems of VISA and MasterCard because they already have their own payment systems for their credit cards.

VISA and MasterCard is by far, a more accepted payment method for a lot of people. This is because these two companies operate in around 20 million locations worldwide. However, American Express is more difficult to use because they still don't have the payment systems that these other two companies have.

But, American Express is now upgrading their payment systems and considering opening up payment methods in other countries.

However, American Express has its advantages. American Express is widely popular in North America and Europe where this credit card can offer great credit card deals. Then can offer very attractive rates, great rewards, and also great customer service.

American Express is unique in its own way. Because of the great offers and great rates, American Express credit cards are well on its way to become one of the most popular credit cards used by people. American Express offers the "blue" card where it is gaining popularity for a lot of consumers in North American and in Europe.

They offer four different blue cards where it is different from each other. Here are the different blue cards that American Express offers their clients:

-American Express Sky Blue

The Sky Blue card that American Express offer is one of the best travel rewards card you can ever have. They offer great traveling benefits to their clients. It offers no black out dates and also no travel restrictions unlike other travel cards you would find in the market. This will mean that a Sky Blue card holder will be allowed to travel wherever they want and whenever they want. The benefits get as much as 5% cash back from anything they purchase with a Blue Cash card unlike the 1% or 2% cash back cards from other credit card companies.

-American Express Blue Card

The Blue Card is the original card offered by American Express. Although it doesn't have much of the features that the Blue Cash and Sky Blue cards offer, the original Blue Card is still a great choice. The Blue Card offers 0% APR up to 15 months. Other benefits are 4.99% APR on balance transfers and it also has great rewards program that can match other rewards program offered by other credit cards. Also, there is no annual fee with the Blue Card.

-American Express Jet Blue

The Jet Blue Card American Express offer gives you points whenever you use it to fly on Jet Blue Airways. For the first time users of Jet Blue, they will instantly get 5,000 points.

American Express truly gives what you want in a credit card. Low cost credit card processing involves a cheaper means to accept credit card numbers, apply them to the merchant's account, and obtain payment from the creditor for the amount. A business?s success or failure depends on whether or not it accepts credit card orders.

Low cost credit card processing is indispensable to raise the profitability of your business. Many people waste considerable amounts of money on extravagant processing. Often, processing statements are so difficult to read that it is virtually impossible to estimate how much money you are actually paying. Low cost credit card processing helps you run a more successful business operation.

In the United States, the cost of credit card processing is about $10 to $20 (per month) in flat fees, plus a small percentage of your sales, known as a discount rate. The discount rate is as low as 1.69% for an offline business, while discount rate for mail order and online merchants is about 2.19%. Using a low cost credit card processing technique, the transaction fee averages only about 25 cents for all merchants.

Low cost credit card processing falls into three types. The first is using a virtual terminal that allows manual addition of mail. The second employs a simple integration technique that connects your website directly to the credit card and bank system. The third type uses an advanced mechanism for custom-linking your system to other more composite systems using a transaction gateway server.

Lots of card processing companies offer you reliable, low cost and comprehensive credit card processing. A reliable low cost credit card processing service uses modern encryption technology to ensure security.

By Thomas Morva

Mobile Credit Card Processing Equipment

In today's business environment, credit card processing equipment is an essential tool for completing an online transaction. Compared to traditional credit card processing services, mobile credit card processing ensures faster payment, increases overall sales and credibility, and saves a lot of money. A well maintained mobile credit card processing equipment is a must for such transactions. Mobile credit card machines are useful for those merchants who like to take their business to the customers. The functioning of a mobile credit card machine is simple. By swiping the customer's credit card through the mobile credit card processing equipment, all the transaction processes are done automatically in real time. When the merchant gets the authorization, a printed receipt is given to the customer.

Mobile credit card processing equipment helps in accepting payments through online credit cards as well as by telephone. With its state-of-the-art technology, mobile credit card processing equipment provides a secure payment gateway that enables fraud screening and also real time reporting of every transaction. For an online transaction, only a virtual terminal is needed. This enables you to get all the services through the Internet.

Mobile credit card processing equipment has certain added advantages when compared to traditional wireless merchant accounts. They include low monthly charges, low processing fee and no monthly minimum processing charge. Today, the wireless mobile credit card processing equipment is the latest in convenience and portability.

Many business concerns sign a contract with mobile credit card processing equipment companies for their services. These contracts might be for 2 to 5 years, a fact which is often unknown to the firm. Consequently, if a firm needs to terminate a contract, a cancellation fee is charged by these companies. So care should be while choosing the services of such companies.

By Thomas Morva

Credit Card Merchant Accounts

When a merchant accepts a credit card from a customer to complete a sale, the customer’s card number, credit card information, the merchant ID and the amount received travel through the bank’s or the processor’s computer network. The merchant can receive the credit card payment from his customer in three ways: when the customer uses the credit card at the terminal; over the Internet, where either the merchant or the customer keys in the necessary credit card information; or through the phone, where the merchant puts in the information. It is the responsibility of the bank or the processor to check with the corresponding card network, to confirm the card’s validity and to see if the necessary funds are the available for the sale.

Subsequently, the customer’s bank sends the merchant an approval over the network. This formality completes the sale. However, no money will be transferred to the merchant’s bank account until the full batch – that is all the sale completed that day by the merchant - has been transferred to the merchant’s processor or bank.

At the culmination of the business day, the merchant sends over his batch to the credit card network for necessary processing. The transactions to the credit card network go through the merchant's credit card processor. Each of those transactions is then sent back to the customers’ bank for debiting. The bank then debits the customer’s account and transfers the correct funds to the merchant's bank or processor through the Federal Reserve Bank's Automated Clearing House. The bank or the processor collects the funds and sends them to the merchant’s bank account.

By Marcus Peterson

Direct Merchant Credit Card Applications

For processing any online order, a business website should provide an online payment choice. The most common form of payment is through merchant credit card. Marketing studies indicate that if a site is not made to accept credit cards, it would lose 60-80% of its potential orders. A direct merchant credit card account is one of the best ways for any business to boost sales.

Direct merchant credit card applications are somewhat complex in nature. It is not like setting up a consumer credit card application. It is entirely different from opening a business checking account. Direct merchant credit card is a special banking account used for handling the income from credit card deals. The merchant account issuer confirms the credit card, processes the transaction, and deposits the balance into your account normally within 24 to 48 hours.

In general, there are two ways to apply for a credit card - a paper copy application and an online credit card application. Online application is the easiest and fastest way to get a credit card. While applying for a credit card online, it is necessary to check whether the website offers a safe means to protect your private details.

There are three types of merchant account fees. The first is an initial setup fee required to approve and set up your account. The second is the percentage fee which is a proportion of each credit card transaction depending on your total volume of sales. It is inversely proportional to the sales volume. The last one is a monthly service fee, which includes the cost of any credit card processing equipment, software or services.
